Kombucha Starter Brewing 101

Standard

My new obsession is brewing the incredibly tasty yet insanely healthy Kombucha (probiotic) tea!  Brewing Kombucha is easier said than done though.

Over the past few months I’ve been frustrated a number of times trying to grow it on my own. It seems most all the information to grow your Kombucha starter aka kombucha mother doesn’t give the whole picture.

Brewing Picture Perfect Kombucha Starter

The more I tried the more I realized that it’s easier to grow the kombucha mother than people make it out to be.  In previous attempts I had purified water, boiled tea, tested countless sugars, all with very little success.

In the end I found the best way to make the kombucha starter was simply with a single bottle of the tasty tea purchased from the store as shown below:

Here’s My Easy Brewing Kombucha Mother

Give this a shot:

  1. Pour GT’s Original Kombucha into an empty glass pickle jar.
  2. Add 1/8 cup table sugar.

Growing the Mother:

  1. Cover jar with a clean washcloth and seal with rubber band.
  2. Store in a warm place (75F or so).
  3. Wait (as much as a month) until you have a 1/2 Inch or so thick mother.

Ready, Set, Go Kombucha Brewing!

Now you can add your mother to a sweet tea mixture, cover and store in a warm place in the same fashion.  After a week or so you’ll have your very own Kombucha tea to enjoy.

If you don’t plan on making tea immediately with your Kombucha starter, it’s best to store it in the fridge submerged in a little sweet tea and covered with a washcloth (else 02 Buildup will blow the bottle up… eeek!).  This slows it’s growth down until you’re ready to gear up into full kombucha brewing mode!

  1. FANTASTIC!!! Thank you – pickles are also a fermented food, so eating the pickles (if no sugar is added and are low in salt) its a great probiotic to start with before making your tea!

  2. You are absolutely correct! Pickles rock, and are excellent source of probiotics… especially home made ones. Do you have a good recipe?
